From the perspective of a band, I say do it. The point is to get the music out. If the music spreads and people learn about the band more people will end up buying the CDs anyway.

Well in this age you have loads of discographys of all sorts of bands on any downloading system. Any kinds of underground, rare, bootleg , comps, movie-clip , commerical etc.... bands . Things are being ripped on to the internet pretty fast. Now to me i think the true meaning, value and worth and continuity and fairness of underground music and music in general lies with searching out bands, buying the album on vinyl perhaps CD or TAPE, for more practical usage. I think downloading with easy access to anyone on the net can eventually lead to :

no.1 : music to be less meaningful and more commerical

no.2 : Increases poseurs and idoits, and dangerous idoits

no.3 : Creates a cheaper less authentic feel of the song. And makes you get sick of the song easier

no.4 : Hurts the underground bands as now you can download full albums, whole live- movies, or pay a cheap price for it at itunes(which you could already get free at kazaa or soulseek) "and not give a shit" about buying even the cd. Imagine if we all had this attitude. Imagine if you were a band? Would you like this to happen? Depending on "i'll post my shit everywhere on the net or to people" doesnt help as much. Bands like this tend to go NOWHERE. Trust me.

Do you think our scene is going somewhere when the core of it is over-taken by stupid trendy conviences?

Wouldent you rather work hard and save up, perhaps, steal or copy stuff on tapes or cds. ?

The only positive thing for non-abusers of music downloading is to "sample" bands and music genres you havent heard before which pays off since you pay for the net or for free if someone else is paying.

Okay you probably think im kinda stupid, but i think tape-trading and cd burning is not as bad and better than downloading. But in reality and age we cant stop them.

Maybe not even i-pods or god knows what little gadget thing next.

But hey we can try, and try harder not to abuse them.

My 2 cents.

Well, I can "imagine" if I were in one of those bands and I'm for it. People bootleg, "tape" and steal the music anyway. When people know about a band the band gains in popularity. That equals more CDs/ vinyl sold and better shows and tours.
I miss a lot of things about pre-Internet Punk rock, tape trading being one of them. In order to get cool music you had to make friends with people who had access to better music and the only way to get a lot of underground music was by trading. The new kids got to know people who'd been around a while this way. So that is the #1 downside to downloading music for me.

Hexa, I agree. Pre-Internet it was about relationships with people to trade with and share. Good times... that's how I got to hear the Screeching Weasels..haha

haha, irony...

i got an (wtf in 3..2..) authorized bootleg of screeching weasels stuff, when ben was with em and shit, its authorized bootleg beacuase the band found out about their stuff was leaked out into the media, and so they compiled it and sold it, good stuff though, the first thing i heard when i played it was ben weasel saying "thats right, your stereo's fukked up!"

and soulseeq costs a dollar for unlimited downloading, its not free

Im down with downloading. If it's any good, yeah, i'll go get the album, but i dont like it...then it doesnt matter because it was free anyways! it;s a good way to see what kind of music/bands you might like, other than seeing them live or whatever
