Becuase that's really a mature action to take.

They could use a good slapping to knock some sense into them.

Slapping someone cannot make them more intelligent. Only less intelligent.

Not neccessarily. How do you teach a dog not to shit on your floor? You catch it in the act, rub its nose in it, smack it, and toss it outside. Humans, ironic as it might seem, learn in the exact same way. Spare the spoils, rod the child.

If I ever caught someone doing that to a dog... let's just say the dog would have a new owner. Doing THAT does NOT teach a dog. It only makes them fear and hate you. And anyone who does it should be deported to the Arctic Ocean.

Machin, let me explain this more fully so that you can understand. You must catch the dog in the act, or it will never know what it did wrong. Then, you show it what it did wrong. Hitting it (Alas, I can't find a lighter term at the moment) teaches it that it is wrong. Taking them outside shows them where to do it. On that same note, hitting them is something they will remember, and thusly, they will remember the entire episode.

However, on that same note, if the dog goes outside later that day, you should probably reward them. (Note: You have to catch them in the act, otherwise they won't know what they're being rewarded for.)

You should read Starship Troopers; it explains it better than I could.

This meets problems in humans, though, because we'll expect rewards every time, which is problematic.[/u]

@Dirk:

You must catch them in the act, true, but not rub their nose in it or hit them.

That is what CERTIFIED DUMBASSES do. (Y'can tell I feel strongly about this because I rarely insult anyone.)

Give them a firm "No!" but do not hit them.

This information brought to you by Matthew Margolis, expert dog trainer.

You don't literally rub their noses in it, Machin, just force them to look at it.
