I know this topic is old, but I thought I'd stick my 2 cents in. I have a red P-bass. It sounds good, wasn't too expensive, and it's just classic only problem is it's super heavy, so my shoulder gets sore:) The coolest bass I've ever seen was an upright bass, painted "glow in the dark" yellow, with a skull on the top (the band: Necrophilist). Good luck in the search for a good one!

yeah i had this place that actually does detailing on cars to paint my upright basses for me... one is white with black flames and the other one is just really shiny black like tiger army's bass player's. the hard part about paint jobs on upright basses is that the paint affects the sound a lot. i painted my first upright bass black with nautical stars, but i had to take all the paint off because it was the wrong type of paint and it completely dulled the tone and actually made everything sound flat. but anyways. yeah.

you can get a kramer bass for $149 at musicyo. despite the extremely low prices, kramer makes excellent equipment. the dual rail humbuckers on their guitars are meaty as all hell.

I want a Musicman. To me that is the happy place.
Anote to Jobu121: when you look for used basses, ask the tech to check the truss rod for you and tell you how tight it is already. I bought a used "hondo II" (didn't even know there was a "hondo I") three years ago and loved it. It was heavier than a St. Bernard but just plain fun as hell to play. Anyway, eventually the truss rod couldn't be tightened anymore to lower the action so I had to buy a new bass.
Since I can't afford the Musicman, I bought a Carlo Robelli active P. It's ok, but I really miss my Hondo. I'm just wasting time till I can afford the Musicman.

I play an Ibanez SRX700. Incredibly versatile sound, a dream to play, and it looks great too. I have a Fender P-Bass as well, but it can't match my Ibanez. At least not in my eyes.

And hows the band doing, any good shows comming up? And git your asses out here to L.A. mutherfukkers!

i use a fender deluxe series p-bass special. i looooove that pick-up combo. it's sparkly red too!!! i also use a reverend rumblefish (they're lesserknown but absolutely amazing and not too expensive) and then i have my 1967 Gibson Les Paul Classic bass. amazing but i'm afraid to play out with it because i dont want to break it.

how about upright bass players? anyone????
i built my own upright so its not really anything...
